1 year agotalk show host who hates to talk
Maria and I went out to eat last Wednesday at a place called Thai One On. It’s a Thai/Sushi place up in Towson that I driven by a million times but never checked it out. One of the best dinners I’ve had in some time. A few minutes after we ordered, Maria noticed that two of her college professors had walked in and were sitting behind us. Even though it has been a few years, Maria thought they would recognize her and didn’t want to have to talk to them. She was in one of those moods… A mood I’m in ALL the time.
I pull some of the craziest stunts sometimes to avoid having to converse with people. Like, when I go grocery shopping, you’ll see me with my headset on bopping my head slightly. The headphones are plugged into nothing, I just fell people are less likely to approach you if you have headphones on. Another trick is faking talking on my cell phone. For the most part, all of my neighbors are pretty cool. That does NOT mean I wanna have conversations and small talk with them every time I walk up to or away from my house! So, that’s when a fake phone call perfect.
The scariest thing about the fake phone call is when you start believing you are actually having a real phone conversation! It happens to me all the time. I’m stepping out my front door, grab my phone (I make sure the ringer is off… you never want to be caught when you are having a fake phone call and your phone actually rings) and fake answer. It goes like this; me: “Hey man, yeah, yeah… um, like 15 minutes… what do you think? Ok, ok I figure they can meet us there… when are you leaving?” Ok at this point I’m getting in my car, I have successfully avoided all conversation with my neighbors. Next thing I know, I’m sitting in my front seat waiting for the “person” I’m talking to on the phone to answer my question!
Grocery shopping, walking to my car, walking the dog… these things I have mastered doing without talking to people. Mostly cause I’m always prepared. The ones I have to work on are riding in the elevator, doctor’s waiting room, on line at the bank, etc.
I have no idea why I hate these conversations so much. I guess it may be because in 90% of these situations the talk is pointless; people asking you questions about shit neither of you really give a shit about. Like talking just because you happen to have a mouth. To me, it’s just a waste. A simple hello, a hand wave… that’s all that’s really needed, unless there is a pressing issue that you both must deal with at the moment.
Wow, I just went back and read all this. I’m a total dick. I should feel lucky that people even acknowledge my presence. I mean, who the fuck am I? Oof. I suck.
